If you want to dominate the search results, you need to determine what keywords your audience is really looking for. These are the topics you should write about and the keywords you should use in your article.

Once you've done your keyword research and have a list of keywords to focus on, it's time to start writing.

These are long-form texts, with very few images and no direct product links.

Now compare that to a transactional keyword phrase such as "best SEO books to buy." Reboot Online Marketing Ltd conducted an outbound linking experiment (twice) that revealed that external links can help improve a web page ranking. However, this 2016 article on the Search Engine Roundtable indicates the opposite (i.e., John Mueller stated that links to specific websites are not a ranking factor).

However, in this video Google Webmasters from July 2019, John Mueller said, "Linking to other websites is a great way to provide value to your users. Often, links help users learn more, verify your sources, and better understand how your content is relevant to the questions they have."

Whether or not links to other websites are a direct ranking factor, the fact remains that the user experience and the value they get from it is Google's top priority. Therefore, adding outbound links to highly relevant and authoritative websites is a great way to provide additional value to your visitors, which can be rewarded with higher rankings for your blog posts in the SERPs.

So just add these links naturally into the content without aiming for a specific number. As you can see in this content section, I added 4 links because it was necessary to support my ideas with quality references.

Once you've followed all the previous steps in this guide and your content has been written in the most SEO friendly way possible, the next thing to do is to optimize the meta tags. This includes the meta title tag and the meta description of the article.

If you are using the WordPress content management system, you will need an SEO plugin such as Yoast, RankMath, or All In One SEO to write optimized meta tags for your content, as this feature is not available by default. After installing one of these plugins, you can make adjustments to the meta title tag and meta description.

The basic strategy is to include your main SEO keyword as close to the beginning of your meta title tag as possible and keep the total length of this text under 60 characters. You should also place your SEO keyword in the meta description field and limit its length to 160 characters.

Google may or may not display your optimized meta description based on the search query the content is ranking for, but you don't have to worry about it. SEO relevance has already been established by inserting your SEO keyword in this field.

Regarding the meta title tag, Google will most often provide the custom SEO information you wrote, as long as you follow the additional step for the H1 tag, as shown below.

Copy your SEO-friendly meta title tag into the H1 title tag, which is usually the title of your article or blog post. That's it.

By using this strategy, you practically force Google to use your meta title as is. Otherwise, the search engine may rewrite your meta title or replace it with your H1 tag which may or may not be optimized for your target keywords.

13. SEO Optimized URL

The URL structure of your articles and blog posts is also crucial for SEO. To optimize this HTML attribute to make it as search engine friendly as possible, simply place your main target keyword in the URL.

For example, the URL for the "Content Marketing Tips" article is simply /content-marketing-tips/. You can easily see what the keyword target phrase is just by looking at the SEO optimized URL.
